This would be a focus group type-question. I want everyone's opinion who reads this. From people who have played baseball all their life to those who have never even picked up a bat: what type of promotions attract you to go hit at an indoor batting cage?

our son(8 yrs) playes baseball in the spring this was his 2nd yr and his dad practices with him during the spring.But as soon as the "season" is over the ball and bat go in the basement and stays there till the next year.i just worry our son will fall behind everyone else if he does not practice at all for 9 mons.He really loves baseball and i would hate to see this happen. Should i talk to my husband about taking him out to the batting cages like once a month?

hi i have like a dozen of baseballs that i don't really use and theres a batting cage near my house and
im wondering should i buy a bat just to throw a ball up and hit it?would it make me a better hitter
ps~i have no friends that like baseball
i am on a team but my teammates live far away and they fat/lazy

However; the cost of a shaved bat can vary depending on the quality of the job that is done on it. Thats right, there is high quality shaved bats and cheap home spun shaved bats and there is quite a difference between the two of them.

Use the Best

If you are going to take the risk of using a shaved bat in a game, why on earth would you chince on a cheap shaved bat? When you step up to the plate with your juiced bat you want it to deliver he full potential that a good quality shaved bat can. A good quality shaved bat can add as much as forty feet in distance to your hits.

Experience Counts

Before a bat is shaved it has to be rolled and this should be done by someone who is experienced at doing this. Its not something that you need a science degree to do, but at the same time, you want to have someone do it has done it for some time and has a good feel for it.

A Quality Job

Now, to shave the bat you really want someone with a higher level of expertise to do the job. Its a fairly delicate procedure when it is done right and it also requires some specialized machinery to do properly. A high quality saved bat is like a fine tuned instrument.

When you are talking about juiced bats, what you really are talking about is rolled and shaved bats. A  rolled bat is legal and impossible to detect any way. However; it won't deliver the type of results that good quality rolled and shaved bat will.

Precision Results

Shaving a bat does require a measurable level of expertise, along with some specialized equipment. The inside walls have to be perfectly even and shaved in a way that delivers maximum spring. Going at a bat with a barrel sanding attachment on the end of a drill extension will work, but it won't deliver precision fine tuned results.

Cheap Work for Less that Optimal Results

Also, a bat shaved this way will inevitably have weak spots in its sides, so it can't be expected to last as long as a bat that has been precision shaved by a professional. So in the end, any savings from an amateur juiced bat will disappear when the bat cracks before its time.

Rolling your bat is done by rolling the bat through two rollers which will increase the trampoline effect of the bat. This will improve the batted ball speed by approximately 10%. This equates to 30-40 feet. One commonly used method that is used along with shaving is end loading. By adding weight to the end cap when it\'s removed you will change the balance point of the bat. This extra weight in the end allows the barrel get through the hitting zone quicker.

Bat Rolling Summary

Bat Rolling is done with a Bat Rolling Machine.  When you roll your bat you are breaking down the glue that binds the composite fibers that make up your bat. Rolling accomplishes what would normally take 300-500 hits on the bat. The advantages are you don\'t have to spend hours of batting practice and you eliminate the wear and tear on your bat. Bat Rolling is the preferred altering process as it does not effect your warranty and there is not way to tell the bat has been rolled.

Effect of Bat Doctoring

On average you\'ll see improvements anywhere from 5-15mph on the batted ball speed. This equates to 30-50 feet more distance. It doesn\'t stop there. The improved batted ball speeds will allow those infield hits get to the outfield quicker. When you shave your bat you are thinning the walls out and this will effect the durability of the bat greatly. It will also void the warranty of your bat and you will not be able to send it back should you have any issues with it. Rolling a bat does not effect the durability of the bat and you will maintain your warranty. For this reason I recommend rolling a bat vs. shaving. Most associations have rules regarding altering and we recommend that you contact them regarding the specifics.

Bat Doctoring Results

Generally, doctoring your bat will make it perform at a significantly higher level than it normally would. This allows you to concentrate on your swing vs. having to worry about swinging hard and maintaining the proper swing mechanics. A doctored bat will provide about 10% more batted ball speed and this equates to 30-40 feet of additional distance. In case you didn\'t know most higher level players have ALL of their bats doctored in some fashion. If you want to compete at a higher level you must have a doctored bat. It\'s like going to a gun fight with a knife.
