Baseball is my favorite time of the year, for many reasons.

First, it pulls me out of the nastiness that is winter in the northeast.

Second, it reminds me of dirty water dogs at the stadium, and cheering and believing in something that is way beyond my control, but yet I feel as though my voice and my faith makes a difference.

Third, my grandfather was a yankee fan, who passed it to my dad, who passed it to me. We go to several games a year together and it is my favorite thing in the world!

Baseball begins in April, when tax forms are due. Just kidding.

Drive to the game and pay for gas in your beat up 1993 Toyota Camry: $30

    Pay for parking: $8

Pay for the tickets in the RF bleacher seats: $20

New hat, sunglasses, khaki shorts, flip-flops, team shirt, and mit: $75

Three beers and some hot dogs in the parking lot (that you brought): $9

A bag of sunflower seeds: $1.59

Harassing Ozzie Guillen from 300 feet, throwing peanuts at the stupid security guard, catch a ball from the opposing team, throw it back onto the field, having Bert Blyleven circle you, singing take me out to the ball game, starting a verbal fight with the guy next to you about who’s team is better, seeing Joe Mauer get 5 hits, Torii Hunter making a Web Gem, Johan Santana striking out 10, and Justin Morneau hitting a walk-off homerun: Priceless.

It’s baseball season, and there ain’t no time like it.

Baseball actually takes up the majority of the year. With the playoffs it’s about seven months: April 1st – late October / early November. That’s not counting spring training. Even the teams that don’t make the playoffs are playing for six months.

I love the sport of baseball, and actually am a big Yankee fan as well, but maybe you should clarify your ‘question’ by saying Opening Day.

It’s the continuation of tradition. Who will be the next golden boy? The game that our fathers taught us begins again. We see the stars of today, but we feel the stars of yesterday because baseball is a haunted game. We pull for our team, win, lose or draw. We even pull for those Cubbies. The diamond, the grass, the lights, sights, sounds. Baseball, there’s nothing like it.
